THE ATTORNEY
GENERAL WHO
HUNTED OUR
TROOPS ON LIES

Richard Hermer KC — now Lord Hermer, Attorney General of England and Wales — drove a multi-year campaign of lawfare against decorated British soldiers based on allegations he was repeatedly warned were fabricated.

A Witch Hunt
Against Heroes

In 2004, following the Battle of Danny Boy in Iraq, eight Iraqi claimants alleged that British soldiers had murdered and tortured detainees at Camp Abu Naji. Richard Hermer was their lead counsel.

THE TELEGRAPH INVESTIGATION • 22–23 APRIL 2026

He Was Warned.
He Continued Anyway.

The Telegraph's forensic examination of more than 25,000 pages of emails and legal documents reveals that Hermer was repeatedly warned the core allegations were lies — yet he drove the case forward, discussing "wiggle room" and pushing for quick damages before the truth emerged.

INTERNAL EMAILS REVEAL
"Wiggle room if the killings did not happen"
Hermer and his team discussed how to proceed even if key parts of the allegations proved false. They sought "speedy acceptance of damages" before the case collapsed under scrutiny.
WARNINGS IGNORED
"His clients were 'on the make'"
Multiple warnings reached Hermer that the Iraqi claimants' stories were fabricated. He pressed on regardless, later stating it was irrelevant whether his clients were "a saint or a member of al-Qaeda".
THE INQUIRY'S VERDICT (DECEMBER 2014)
“Wholly without foundation and entirely the product of deliberate lies, reckless speculation and ingrained hostility.”
— Sir Thayne Forbes, Chairman of the Al-Sweady Public Inquiry
The Inquiry found that the most serious allegations — unlawful killings and torture at Camp Abu Naji — were the product of a conspiracy by the claimants. Some lesser ill-treatment occurred, but nothing resembling the headline claims Hermer championed for years.
THE CORE PROBLEM

Now He Oversees
Lawfare Against
Our Troops

Hermer is currently the Attorney General — the most senior law officer in England and Wales. He advises the government on legal matters, superintends the prosecution services, and is the ultimate guardian of the public interest in the administration of justice.
THIS IS NOT ANCIENT HISTORY
While Hermer was pursuing false claims against British soldiers in 2004–2014, the same patterns of lawfare are now being deployed against serving SAS personnel in Afghanistan (Haddon-Cave Inquiry) and veterans in Northern Ireland. He now holds the power to influence or halt these processes.
1
He knowingly advanced false allegations
The Telegraph investigation proves he received warnings the claims were lies. He did not withdraw. He doubled down.
2
Financial incentive to prolong suffering
Acting on a no-win, no-fee basis, Hermer had a direct personal financial interest in the success of claims that the official inquiry later proved were built on lies.
3
Now he holds ultimate power over similar cases
As Attorney General, he is positioned to oversee — or obstruct — current inquiries that use the exact same lawfare tactics against serving and former Special Forces personnel. The conflict is total.
4
He has shown contempt for the truth
When later questioned about his role, Hermer reportedly stated it was irrelevant whether his clients were "a saint or a member of al-Qaeda". This is the man now responsible for the integrity of British justice.

Referred to the Bar Standards Board

Shadow Justice Secretary Nick Timothy MP has formally referred Lord Hermer to the barristers' regulator for alleged serious professional misconduct over his role in the Al-Sweady witch hunt.

WHAT THE REFERRAL MEANS
The Bar Standards Board is the independent regulator of barristers in England and Wales. A referral for "serious professional misconduct" is not routine. It triggers an investigation that can result in sanctions up to disbarment. Hermer's conduct — pursuing claims he was warned were false, for personal financial gain, against serving soldiers — is precisely the kind of behaviour the BSB exists to police.
This is the first time a sitting Attorney General has faced such a referral for pre-appointment conduct.
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

He Must Resign.
Or Be Sacked.

A man who knowingly advanced false war crimes allegations against British soldiers has no place at the apex of the British legal system.
